A Report On The E-C Translation Of Let Me Lie Under The Principle Of Coherence

This report is based on the translation of Let Me Lie,a psychological thriller written by contemporary British novelist Clare Mackintosh and published in March 2018 by Little,Brown Book Group.The translation project was entrusted by Chengdu TransFLY Culture Communication Co.,Ltd.Let Me Lie features the extensive depictions of characters’ elusive inner world,which is presented through their interior monologues or inner speeches.Interior monologue often disrupts the text’s spatial and temporal order as well as the plot sequence due to its syntactically incomplete and semantically incoherent nature.Hence,there are inevitably some missing links in the novel,which bring about obstructions to comprehension and translation for the translator.Those missing links are primarily caused by elliptical sentences,nominalized structures,tense changes,repetition structures,as well as difficult words and phrases.Therefore,this report discusses how the translator perceives and reconstructs coherence,as well as preserves literary value when handling the translation of elliptical sentences,nominalized structures,tense changes,repetition structures,as well as difficult words and phrases.Under the principle of coherence,this report elaborates the relations of relevant elements inside and outside the source text,analyzes the identification of coherence,and attempts to build the relations in the target text with appropriate translation strategies and methods so as to reconstruct coherence.Through case analysis,this report draws the following conclusions.Firstly,intra-textual factors,such as cohesion,tense chains,and topic chains,and extra-textual factors,including culture,common sense,etc.,can be employed to perceive and reconstruct coherence.Secondly,with regard to the translation of elliptical sentences and repetition structures,literal translation can be utilized to maintain the linguistic forms so as to preserve the literary value.Thirdly,concerning nominalized structures,the linguistic form should be removed due to the difference between English and Chinese.Besides,lexical device can be adopted to reconstruct the static description which is produced by nominalized structures in the source text.Fourthly,in terms of frequent time changes as well as challenging words and phrases,amplification is a primary method to construct time markers in Chinese and to narrow the cultural gap.
