With the development of globalization, communication and cooperation have increased in the field of petroleum between China and western countries.A great number of petroleum literature has been generated correspondingly. Therefore, accurate translation of petroleum literature has become particularly crucial.Guided by the theory of Nida's Functional Equivalence, this report discusses some translation techniques related to petroleum translation from English to Chinese in the translation process.Functional equivalence does not mean word for word or sentence for sentence formal equivalence. It requires the translator to represent the information in the source text with the closest and most natural language. This theory emphasizes the replication of the information of original text without necessarily keeping its original forms, which meets the requirement of the petroleum translation. The report is based on the sixth, the seventh and the eighth chapter of Petroleum. The material involves petroleum engineering, physics, machinery and other disciplines. It is technical in language and complicated in content,so its translation is a great challenge.According to the characteristics of the source text, this report analyses and summarizes the specific examples from the respects of vocabulary and sentence in petroleum translation, exploring the translation skills adopted in the translation practice, such as addition, omission, conversion word clauses, diction, conversion voice, shifting and division.Through this practice, the translator has got a better understanding of the language of petroleum English and accumulated some experience for the future translation work of similar materials. It is hoped that this report can offer some help for people engaged in translation of petroleum English.Figure 0;Table 0;Reference 26...
