Application Of Syntactic Linearity In Consecutive Interpretation

Consecutive interpreting is essential for many international conferences because of its high precision,however,the interpreters are often faced with problems such as missing information and poor quality of translation output.Syntactic linearity principle is one of the most basic principles in simultaneous interpreting.It can greatly relieve simultaneous interpreters from heavy memory burden and help with the dealing of long and complex sentences.In this paper,the writer aims to bring about a case study of the application of syntactic linearity in consecutive translation.Based on a mock consecutive interpreting of an excerpt of speech at the “Microsoft Build Developer Conference”,this report introduces the process and evaluates its quality in details,from the preparation work to the analysis and conclusion after the practice.Meanwhile,based on the study method of case analysis and comparison,this paper focuses on the application of syntactic linearity in consecutive interpretation,including the application and the exception.Case analysis has proved that syntactic linearity principle can be applied in consecutive interpreting in most cases.With the help of interpreting techniques such as sentence division,transformation and repetition,this principle can relieve interpreter’s pressure and help them to preserve more information and improve their interpreting.
