With the development of globalization and China’s opening up, translation as the bridge of political, economic and cultural communications among different countries, has attracted increasing attentions from both domestic and foreign scholars. Besides, translators and interpreters of different levels and fields are urgently needed in China. Interpretation includes many types, in which Conference Interpretation is surely an important and highlighting one. Many international issues are discussed and decided in the international conferences. Thus, Conference Interpretation plays a vital role in it. Besides international conferences, conference interpretation is often used in business negotiation, news media, visits and so on. However, in these fields, the requirement to the interpreter is comparatively lower. Generally speaking, there are two models in conference interpretation, consecutive interpretation and simultaneous interpretation. For the sake of accuracy, consecutive interpretation is more widely used in conferences. To meet the requirements of interpreter both at home and abroad, Master of Translation and Interpretation is set in many universities in China to cultivate translator and interpreters. However, MTI students are still among the beginners and will inevitably encounter various problems in their practices and trainings. Through the analysis and generalization of translation materials, this essay aims to research on the application of syntactic linearity in the consecutive interpretation and give certain resolutions to related problems.Syntactic linearity, also called natural-flow translation, indicates translation should be done according to the structure and order of source language, but not word-to-word translation. In the application of syntactic linearity, the interpreter cuts the source language into several sense groups and links them with conjunctions, and then the whole sentence is translated. This is the fundamental principle of syntactic linearity. This essay is a translation practice report. The translation is generally divided into two parts. Problems are found in the first part, and the second part aims to analyze and resolve the problems. After a brief introduction to the background and significance, this essay gives a detailed depiction to the whole process of the translation, for the purpose of finding, analyzing and resolving problems in interpretation trainings. In this essay, Conference interpretation and consecutive interpretation of MTI students are introduced in detail, and great attentions are paid to the application of syntactic linearity in interpretation, especially in consecutive interpretation. Examples in the translation process are taken in the analysis. The analysis to the translation text is done under the guidance of syntactic linearity and also gives a comparison between the texts of the two translation parts. The analysis is designed to probe into the feasibility and advantages of syntactic linearity in the consecutive interpretation of MTI students. Besides, frequent problems the MTI students come across in daily interpretation trainings and practices are raised and certain resolutions are given in the essay.Through the research on the application of syntactic linearity in consecutive interpretation, this essay suggests that syntactic linearity can be and should be used in consecutive interpretations, especially for those beginners represented by MTI students. The application of syntactic linearity helps reduce energy burning, improve translation quality and personal capabilities of interpreters.
