A Practice Report On English Translation Of Splendid Xincheng

This paper is a translation practice report based on the raw material named Splendid Xincheng,which is a tourism text of the Xincheng District published by Xi'an Xincheng Cultural Relics and Tourism Bureau,aiming to promote local tourism resources and provide convenient services for tourists.Xi'an is a city with a rich cultural heritage,and many tourist attractions have a long history and unique characteristics.The source text contains a lot of historical information and terminologies,which inevitably makes the translation practice very challenging.The study of translation practice and the analyses of the difficulties in translation are based on the theory of Functionalist Skopos theory.By studying the text function of the tourism text,the translator thinks that this text has the informative function and the vocative function.Based on the principle of the purpose of translation determines the translation methods that the translator can flexibly adopt the translation methods to achieve the purpose and functions of the source text.Firstly,the source text contains a large number of ancient chronological words such as the reign titles,which may confuse target language readers with different cultural backgrounds.In view of the fact that these words are not important information,the translator adopts the omission method to translate the reign titles,reducing the reader's reading burdens to realize the vocative purpose of the translated text.Secondly,the translator believes that the non-subject sentence should be translated on the basis of the tone of the text,and then to decide whether to retain the active voice of the sentence,and whether to add the subject or to translate the active voice into the passive voice.Thirdly,the translator makes a distinction between the road signs and its English translation,and points out the different methods towards the road signs and its English translation.Furthermore,the translator uses computer-aided translation to summarize the corpus,hoping that can provide a reference for other translators.Splendid Xincheng has not yet been translated into English.Therefore,the translator hopes that the translation will contribute to the improvement of tourism service and the publicity of the tourist resources in Xingcheng District of Xi'an.The translation report is divided into five parts.The first part is the description of the translation task,which mainly introduces the content of the text,the purpose and significance of the translation,and analyzes the lexical and syntactic features of the tourism text.The translator summarizes the stylistic features of the tourism text so as to pave the way for the later translation activity.The second part is the description of the translation process,including pre-translation preparation,the translation process and post-translation matters,in which the translator points out that the translation of tourism text has two major difficulties:cross-language and cross-cultural problems.The third part is the theoretical exposition,which introduces the development and basic viewpoints of Functionalist Skopos theory in detail.At the same time,based on the three rules of the Skopos theory the translator proposes three principles to deal with translation difficulties in the tourism text.The fourth part is about analyses of translation cases,which is a major part of the report.According to the particularity of the language of the tourism text and different cultural backgrounds,the translator enumerates eight difficulties in the translation of the tourism text from the aspects of words and sentences,and proposes solutions separately.The fifth part summarizes the practical experience and shortcomings in the practice,and puts forward some suggestions to relevant translations.Through this translation practice,the translator clarified the characteristics of the tourism text and acquired how to use the translation strategies flexibly under the guidance of the Skopos theory.This practice report integrates the theory of translation with practice,which is a valuable experience for the translator's study and work in future.
