Listening is not only an important tool of language communication,but also an important part of foreign language teaching.At present,most of the listening teaching method in our senior high school is simply to check the answers after repeating the listening material.This teaching seriously discourages students’ enthusiasm.Listening process is to gain an understanding of what the speaker is saying.The listener needs to use context to search for valuable clues.Contextual cues are information that contributes to the generation and understanding of discourse in the process of communication.It is performed by language rhythm,code-switching,stylized expression,and vice-language symbols.Listening comprehension is an interpretation of the discourse,while contextual cues in this process can help understand the connection and meaning of information.Therefore,this paper is intended to use contextual cue theory to interpret listening teaching in senior high school.It first analyzes the current situation of English listening teaching in senior high schools in China,and then makes a systematic combing of the literature of contextual clues.On this basis,it applies a detailed teaching case to further deconstructs how teachers can guide students to catch these contextual cues in listening process so as to enhance listening comprehension.The last part of the paper is the empirical link of the of teaching effect.The author uses a whole semester to conduct listening teaching experiment in Xingguo Middle School,Ganzhou City of Jiangxi Province with two classes in senior Grade One as subjects,and compares the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental class and the control class by analysis.A questionnaire survey is also imposed on the experimental class after the two listening tests.The experiment results show that the listening teaching based on contextual cues can improve the achievement and listening ability of high school students,and it can also effectively boost students’ interest in listening class.This study has some implications for high school English listening teaching.
