Chinese translation of long sentences is explored and analyzed in the report based on the sixth and seventh chapters of the book,Structure as Architecture, under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory. The English-Chinese translation of Structure as Architecture is a real task translation practice jointly conducted by group members of a translation project under the management of a teacher in our university. In the process of translation practice,it is found that a large number of long sentences with complicated structure exist in the engineering texts. The accurate understanding and analysis of these long sentences as well as their correct translation methods is of great importance to the quality of the translation, relating to whether the target readers can get to the information closest to the original. In order to solve this problem, some possible translation methods of the long sentences have been used, based on a large amount of relevant literature, combining with what I’ve learned with the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory. The translation version of Structure as Architecture focuses on the target readers who mainly engage in the jobs related to the architecture engineering and lovers of such texts. In order to make the translation more accurate and readable, the translator try to use the methods of Embedding,Cutting,Reversing,Splitting-off and Recasting to translate the long sentences in the source text after full consideration of the long-sentence translation strategies from the predecessors and my own translation practice. To sum up,Embedding can be used if there are many modifiers in long English sentences.Cutting can be chosen when some parallel components are included and the logic of English texts is similar to the Chinese ones. While the English logic is apparently different from that of Chinese,Reversing and Recasting can be taken into consideration.Above all,the priority of the readers of the target language should always be adhered to,and the appropriate methods are supposed to be used in the light of specific conditions.Only in this way can translators produce a better target text.
