The Importance Of Background Knowledge In English-Chinese Translation

This report is a summary of the practical experience on translating the British historian Samuel Rosen Gardner's The Thirty Years' War and The First Two Stuarts and the Puritan Revolution.The original books are historical documents,so the process of translating involves a lot of background knowledge related to culture,geography,politics,history,military,etc.These elements add great difficulty to the translating,and neglecting the background knowledge will lead to unqualified translation.In this context,the topic of this report is centered on background knowledge,mainly discussing the importance of background knowledge in the process of translating historical documents.This report uses the author's actual case analysis in translation to highlight the importance of background knowledge in translation,and summarizes the methods of obtaining background knowledge and the method of complementing background knowledge in the translation version,in order to provide lessons for future translation.This report is divided into four chapters.The first chapter is the introduction,which mainly introduces the background of the task and its importance.The second chapter describes the task process,which is divided into three stages: pre-translation,translation,and post-translation.The third chapter is case analysis.Based on the experience of translation,the author analyzes the influence of background knowledge deficiency on translation and methods of complementing background knowledge based on specific cases.The fourth and the last chapter is conclusion,summarizing the background knowledge acquisition and complement methods,and combines the author's personal experience to sort out the author's experience in this translation.
