A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Modern Historical Document

Along with the social and academic development,more and more Chinese witnesses write in their non-native language.In this way,Chinese thoughts and culture spread to the world more deeply.Many witnesses,however,did not publish the corresponding Chinese versions of such works.The cultural back translation is necessary.It not only enriches the academic achievements in related fields,but also has academic significance on the study of translation strategy and thinking.Back translation was initially used as a manner to measure the quality of translation and a research method to study differences between texts in the original and translated language.Chinese scholars Wang Hongyin(2015)and Jiang Huimin(2012)generated a series study to derive it by establishing “non-native writing” and accordingly “text-less back translation”.Since there is no nativelanguage source text,this atypical back translation,or,technically,cultural back translation,is called “text-less back translation”.The author strives to realize the return and feedback of Chinese culture in this translation.Basing on the translation practice of The Rule of Sinkiang by Feudal Warlord Sheng Shih-ts’ ai,a Chameleon in Communist and Nationalist Garb(1933-1944),the author aims to explore the cultural restoration of the ST,and the translation strategies that could be adopted.Moreover,the history in the ST are age-old,and the cultural changes caused by the element of times have become a major obstacle in the process of translating,such as language style,idioms,and proper nouns.This translation report focuses on the main body of the ST.Based on the translation practice,the report summarizes the translation strategies such as translating under the guidance of references and context etc.as well as the auxiliary translation skills such as speculation and verification.The author realizes the importance of information searching and verification in the practice of text-less back translation.
