Nowadays,China's education is still dominated by campus education and the campus education mainly adopts ‘one to many' teaching mode.Teachers are still the main form of lectures in most classes.Especially in big classes, adopting this teaching mode,it is always inevitable for teachers to ignore the differences of students' abilities, levels and personalities. Most students can only learn from teachers passively. They rarely have any chance to express their own ideas and opinions in class. In the long run, students may lose interest in learning because of lacking initiative inquiry ability and questioning spirit in study, which will make it difficult to bring their potential into full play.As English is a subject of language,if this teaching mode is adopted in its teaching process,it will make a terrible influence on students' development.Although English is a major subject in the College Entrance Examination, because of the restrictions of environment, conditions, teaching ideas and teachers, high schools in distant rural area are still mainly adopting this teaching mode where teachers are centered in class.“English Curriculum Standard for Senior High Schools”(2017)mentions that one of the main objectives of English teaching is to make students develop their independent learning ability and cooperative spirit, making them learn flexibly with effective learning strategies and methods. The theory of independent learning advocates that students should be the main body in class and teachers should be the guide in the process of teaching. In other words,in the teaching process, teachers are required to give classes back to students and they are also advised to improve students' independent learning ability and make them learn actively. Therefore,in order to improve the English teaching condition in rural area, this research tried applying independent learning theory into the English teaching practice of Zhenping NO.1 Senior High School to find out the effects of independent learning. This research mainly focused on the following two questions:(1).what's the effect of independent learning on stimulating student's interest in learning English?(2).what's the effect of independent learning on improving students' English level? The research is based on the theory of independent learning and the researcher adopted pre-tests and post-tests,questionnaires and interviews as the research instruments. After the division of majoring in Art and Science in Zhenping NO.1 Senior High School,Class 1 with 73 students and Class 2 with 75 students were studied for about one year and all the students in the two classes were majoring in Art.Class 1 was the control class and Class 2 was designed as the experimental class. In the experiment process, the researcher adopted independent learning theory as a guideline to implement the teaching mode in the experimental class.Students' subject status in the learning process was stood out,and students were encouraged to form effective learning habits and inspired to learning English actively so as to cultivate their independent learning ability and learning interest. While in the control class, the traditional teaching mode was still adopted. The research results show that, the application of independent learning can improve students' English level greatly.According to the analyses of pre-test and post-test,after the research,it is found that students in the experimental class made greater progress in their English level than those in the control class.Besides, the application of independent learning can make the most of the students in the big class participate in the class activities through cultivating their independent learning ability and habit, which stimulates their English learning interest and confidence greatly and improves their English level accordingly.
