A Report On The Interpreting Task Of Aircraft Fuel Export Business Talks

With the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative,China has accelerated its pace of moving toward the world.An increasing number of Chinese companies are looking for cooperation opportunities in foreign regions,and more and more foreign companies are working hard to expand the Chinese market.In this context,business communication between China and countries alongside the Belt and Road requires not only more interpreters but also higher interpreting quality.Based on the business interpreting task the author accomplished in January 2018,she wrote the report.The business interpreting task centered on the business talks on the issue of aircraft fuel trade cooperation between the management of a Chinese company that produces and sells aviation fuels and the president of the International Business Council of Sri Lanka.Other activities concerned included airport pickup,visit to Wenshu Monastery and a welcoming luncheon.The business talks were small in scale and easy in form and smooth communication was the client’s top requirement.As the Interpretive Theory believes that translation is a communicative behavior,the purpose of which is to convey the communicative meaning,namely the speaker’s intention,but not to pursue the equivalence of language units,it meets the requirements of the interpreting task.Accordingly,the author chose it as the guiding theory.This report focuses on how to solve the problems of expression loss,information redundancy,illogical expressions and taboo topics in the talks between the Chinese and the foreign parties by means of addition,omission,reorganization and explanation under the guidance of the Interpretive Theory.After the business interpreting task,the clients expressed their satisfaction with the author’s interpreting.Having reviewed her performance,including the preparations she made after accepting the interpreting task,the techniques she used to solve problems and the flaws in her interpreting,the author believes that a business interpreter can complete his or her work as long as he or she has qualified bilingual ability,fully understands relevant industry knowledge and background information and uses proper interpreting techniques under the guidance of appropriate theories.Although an interpreter’s interpreting can hardly be perfect,he or she can continue to improve the level of interpreting through learning and practice and eventually become an excellent interpreter.
