The explicitation of personal pronouns is a significant aspect of the study of personal pronouns in translation.Previous studies have mainly investigated the explicitation of personal pronouns in literature translations, and the research on explicitation of personal pronouns in political texts is mainly concerned with the field of written translation or consecutive interpreting but not as much with simultaneous interpreting. Therefore, the author investigates simultaneous interpreting, selecting the three groups of texts as her database:the source texts of Chinese speeches by President Xi Jinping, the texts of English interpretations of Xi's speeches, and the reference texts of English speeches by the former British Prime Minister.Based on the data this thesis examines the explicitation of personal pronouns in Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting of political speeches from the perspective of inter-lingual contrast and intra-lingual contrast. It formulates the following two questions:firstly, what is the pattern of explicitation of personal pronouns in translated English(target texts)compared with source Chinese;secondly, what is the pattern of explicitation of personal pronouns in translated English(target texts)compared with reference English texts. After the frequencies of personal pronouns in each text are counted and the data of personal pronouns are compared and analyzed from the perspective of inter-lingual contrast and of intra-lingual contrast, the paper finds that:firstly, the translated English turns out to be explicit compared with source Chinese, and the degree of explicitness of the first personal pronouns is the highest among the three types of personal pronouns;secondly, the degree of the explicitness of the personal pronouns in translated English is higher than that in reference English, and comparing with reference English, translated English shows an initial sign of explicitation in the first and the third personal pronouns. Finally, this paper summarizes five main factors that may result in the explicitation of the personal pronouns, and provides some suggestions to the interpreting assessment and interpreting teaching.
