The book,Outline of Chinese Historical Geography, written by Mr.Shi Nianhai,is an academic monograph on Chinese historical geography. The book mainly covers historical hydrology, climate and historical vegetation geography and so on.The change of soil, topography, hydrology, coast, climate, vegetation and desert is discussed in four chapters of the book in detail, providing a good model of the respect of geography research. This translation practice mainly takes the last two sections of the second chapter of Outline of Chinese Historical Geography as the source text, which principally describe the issues of climate change and vegetation distribution. The writer has completed this translation by combining theoretical study with practical translation and then makes a report on this translation. The source text is a kind of academic monograph about historical geography, related to a large number of historical documents, professional terminologies,etc..In order to present this kind of academic writing to readers in another language, the writer adopted Peter Newmark's translation strategy of "A Correlative Approach to Translation",also called "Correlative Approach",to guide translation practice.Newmark's correlative approach is mainly to combine semantic translation and communicative translation to narrow the differences between literal translation and free translation and represent the degree of text closeness. This can be achieved from close translation which is generally reflected in three aspects:lexical level, grammatical level and text relevance level.Structurally, the translation practice report consists of five chapters. The first chapter chiefly depicts the background, purpose and relevant information of the source text. The second chapter is the arrangement of translation practice plan, such as pre-translation,while-translation,post-translation etc..The third chapter is the introduction of Newmark's "A Correlative Approach to Translation" and its applicability in translation practice. The fourth chapter is the problems encountered in the translation process and the solutions under the guidance of correlative approach. The last part is the conclusion about the experience from the translation practice.
