| This thesis is based on the translated text of a theatrical monograph--A History of Chinese Theatre in the Twentieth Century(Volume II),which was adopted as one of the items in the National Social Science Funds of China.This academic work illustrates the development history of Chinese theatre with a broad vision,creating a sensation among Chinese theatrical circles after its publication.In a sense,the translation of this monograph is of great significance to promote academic exchange and cultural dissemination.The author is responsible for translating Section 3 and 4 of Chapter 16,which mainly elaborates China’ s theatrical development and reform under the impact of theatrical policy shifts during the 1950 s and 1960 s.“A Correlative Approach to Translation” proposed by Peter Newmark has bridged the gap between semantic translation and communicative translation.The core proposition of it is “The more important the language of the original or source text,the more closely it should be translated.” Under the guidance of “A Correlative Approach to Translation”,the author penetrates into the major and difficult points in the translation of relevant chapter in this book and then adopts proper translation strategies and skills to solve those problems.Due to the cultural and linguistic differences,such factors as theatrical terms,culturally-loaded words,actors’ lines and Chinese sentences in chronicle style are what the author intends to settle.As such,this thesis mainly analyzes the translation from the lexical,grammatical and textual perspectives,aiming to reveal how to reproduce the “importance” of the original text and realize “close” translation.In conclusion,the author expects that this translation report on theatrical academic work can serve as a reference for the translators engaged in the similar text. |
