Abstract/Summary:
This translation report is based on the translation of a historical geography monograph,the source text of which is the first two sections of Chapter Two of the book The Outline of Chinese Historical Geography,with nearly 28,000 Chinese characters.Historical geography mainly explores the relationship between the geographic phenomena in the different historical periods and the corresponding human activities and hence to figure out the pattern of the relationship between these two and apply it to benefit the development of human beings.According to the three text_types of Peter Newmark,the source text belongs to informative text,which his featured by enormous professional knowledge,long time span and broad geographical distribution.The author,professor Shi Nianhai,wrote the book with typical Chinese writing style and used abundant quotations of classical Chinese works.Therefore,the difficulty of this translation is beyond words.With the guidance of Memes of Translation,an analysis is made from the aspects of free-vs-literal supermeme and all-writing-is-translation supermeme regarding the translation problems encountered in this translation practice.This report is composed of the following five chapters.The first chapter is a brief introduction of the translation practice,describing background information,text type and significance of the task.Besides,this chapter also introduces how this report is organized.The second chapter is the detailed introduction of the translation process,including preparations the translator has made before task,the translation process and the problems the translator came across in this process,as well as the proofreading and modification after the translation.The third chapter is a brief introduction about development of Memetics and Memes of Translation.Besides,two types of translation memes,five supermemes and Chesterman’s three groups of strategies,are introduced in this chapter.The last part of this chapter illustrates the applicability of Memes of Translation.The fourth chapter is the case study,which is the most crucial part of this report.With the guidance of two supermemes,the translator adopted the proper strategies to analyze the cases.The fifth chapter is the conclusion part,including the conclusion of the gains,unsolved problems and the future direction of study.The translator has learned a lot from this translation practice,which includes the following three points:First,different translation tasks center on different fields of knowledge.Therefore,translators need to constantly increase reading quantity to broaden their knowledge reserves.Only in this way,can translators be competent for different translation tasks.Second,good language competence serves as the basic quality for a translator.Thus,translators should improve their language capacity of both Chinese and English.Third,translators should acquire different translation theories and strategies to guide the translation process of different types of source texts.
