A Report On The Translation Of King Of The Mountain:The Nature Of Political Leadership(Chapter 1)

Developing from the 1980’s,evolutionary psychology is a new direction of psychological research.It combines research methods of biology,psychology and sociology,draws lessons from modern psychology and evolutionary biology,and examines psychological structure from a modern evolutionary perspective,seeking to identify results of natural selection or sexual selection in human evolution.Since studies on evolutionary psychology are limited in China at present time,the translation and introduction of such works is helpful for us to learn about foreign research results,thus promoting the development of domestic research on evolutionary psychology.King of the Mountain:The Nature of Political leadership is written by Arnold M.Ludwig,an M.D.at Brown University,and was published by the Kentucky University Press in 2004.This book analyzes leaders’ behavior and accomplishments from the perspectives of sociology and evolutionary psychology.Although it is easy to understand,this book offers deep original insights and has strong readability.This report is based on the author’s translation practice of the first chapter of the book and gives detailed analysis on translation methods used during translation.It is composed of four chapters,namely introduction,translation process description,case analysis and the summary and reflection.Among them,case analysis is the core content of the report,in which the author analyzes how to get faithfulness,expressiveness and elegance,the translation standard proposed by Yan Fu,and discusses English-Chinese translation skills employed in the translation of chapter one of King of the Mountain:The Nature of Political leadership.Through this translation practice,the author realizes the importance of the preparation,translation skills and teamwork in the process of translating,and also comes to understand that the high quality of translation depends on solid English and Chinese language knowledge,broad horizon and plentiful translation practices.
