In the field of teaching Chinese language for specific purpose,Business Chinese has been given great importance and discussion.Throughout 1980s Student's interests on this field have been growing very rapidly. However, the student satisfaction of the program was not as they usually expected. One of the reasons why the students feel the program doesn't satisfy their needs is that, most of them think the program doesn't suit themselves. But what program suits them much better? What level suits them much better? It is hard to make an answer between student members with different needs and different purpose. After researching professional literatures of Business Chinese Teaching,I found that most research focused on language skills, whereas less research focused on "culture" and "new cultural phenomenon".As a result, students couldn't acquire the necessary knowledges and information about Chinese culture. One of the main reasons why students show less efficiency on learning process is that, they just learn a language for the sake of communication to one another across contexts. However, the learning process lacks cultural aspect of the context. As a result,Business Chinese classes have been seen reduced to a vocabularies memorizing class. Most Chinese academics agree that,Teaching Chinese language for specific purpose could draw lessons from another researches made on the same field.Nevertheless,Teaching Language for specific purpose theory framework is consist of different concepts and orientations. In order to solve the above mentioned problem,by reviewing the exiting literatures of Language for specific purpose and culture,I decided to adopt in my questionnaire the"needs analysis framework" of Tom Hutchinson&Alan Waters as well as the classification of culture in Standardsfor Foreign Language Learning in the 21st CenturyAs part of my research,I surveyed the specific needs of Business Chinese students' of this subject matter across culture contexts. Here are some of the interesting phenomena that I observed through data analysis:1.Learning motivations are connected with business activities. However, between work experienced people and less work experienced people,I found out that some discrepancy of motivations.2.Most students value"little culture" much than "Big culture",especially the contents which are related to communication.3.Speaking ability is what students want to improve most.4.Work experienced people and less work experienced people have different preferences of the way of learning. In the "Language for specific purpose program",Students not only want to acquire knowledges but also look forward to gaining skills of applied Chinese.Needs analysis can make us know student's expectations well.I hope my research could be used as a reference for program designers, textbook editors, teachers and researchers in the field of Business Chinese.
