Portable Antiquities Scheme is Britain's largest public archaeological project to encourage the voluntary recording of archaeological objects found by members of the public.It aims to enrich people's archaeological and historical knowledge and increase their opportunities of taking part in archaeological activities.It has produced great influence and many media have established columns for it.As an E-C translation practice report,this report selects 16 influential news reports,totaling 10,605 words,from the official website https://finds.org.uk/news.The English source text falls into the category of soft news and the selected texts are concerned with the finding and recording of archaeological objects and other related activities.Before the author began to translate it,no other Chinese versions of it had been found on the Internet and various databases,so the author's translation is the first Chinese version.This report consists of the four chapters;introduction,description of the translation process,case analysis and conclusion.In Chapter One,the author briefly introduces the background and significance of the translation practice and the structure of the translation report.Chapter Two is a description of the translation process including pre-translation preparations,in-translation management and post-translation quality control.Chapter Three is case analysis.The author explores specific translation strategies of the archaeological news report from the aspects of the translations of headlines,terminologies,proper nouns and long sentences.Finally,the author concludes the gains and limitations of the translation practice,hoping to gather experience for future translation work.Based on the translator's own translation practice,this report analyzes the characteristics of the archaeological news report and provides specific translation strategies accordingly.A news headline should be recapitulative and attractive,which can be translated via the strategies of literal translation,using the structure of main heading plus subtitle and using big words and four-character Chinese.The translation of terminologies and proper nouns should be accurate and readable;thus,transliteration and annotation are applied.When necessary,some proper nouns should have their full names translated.As to the translation of long sentences,the translator analyzes syntactical structure as well as gets the general idea in advance,and then she applies linear translation,inverse translation,splitting-off method and reorganization method according to specific contexts.In a word,when translating soft news,translators should focus on flexibility as well as accuracy and objectivity to achieve the aim of dissemination and education.
