A Report On English-Chinese News Translation

As every country witnesses an increasingly frequent communication and exchanges in aspects of economy, politics, culture, society and so forth, people depends much more on the transmission of massive information. As a way to transmit information, news reports these days are increasingly affecting human’s life. During the rapid development of China, it is extremely necessary to know global incidents and international events and also, it is rather significant to translate English news reports in order to make the readers at home understand the contents of an avalanche of English news in a timely manner.The major features of news language are accurate and appropriate, concise and lucid, lively and vivid, stressing on transmitting the facts of the news and centering on "accuracy". As one of the most common styles in routine life, news enjoy a wide and abundant variety of styles; thus it determines that the translation of news absolutely has lots of prominent characteristics and demands. Different from the fiction of literature, news are objective reports about the newly occurred incidents with news value, which distinguishes the reality between news and literature. Meanwhile the translation of news, as a non-literary style, differs from literature translation in translation strategies and techniquesThis report, reviewing the author’s own translation experience, firstly states the overall process of the translation project of the English news reports, which includes three stages: preparation before translation, while-translation, and proofreading and revision. The report then proposes the questions that need to be considered during the translation, demonstrates all difficulties in the translation practice, compares and discusses the translation process, thinking and findings of the translated version, and lastly it probes into and classifies the features and methods of English news from such three aspects as headlines, lexicology, sentences and syntax through a large number of specific instances so as to summarize translation methods, skills and strategies for English news translation which shares the features of frequent use of present tense in place of the past tense, more use of extended simple sentences and complicated premodifiers.
