A Report On The Translation Of American Environmental History(Excerpts)

This translation practice report is based on Carolyn Merchant’s book,American Environmental History,which introduces the changes of the American environment based on American history and is a good reference for Chinese environmental history scholars.This report aims to explore the key points and difficulties that the author encountered in translating the first and second chapters of the book and the translation strategies and techniques that the author used to solve them.The entire translation process lasted for 4 months and was divided into three stages:pre-translation,translation and post-translation.Before the translation,the author read the relevant background materials and parallel texts.The translation was executed strictly in accordance with the translation plan formulated in the pre-translation stage.The key points and difficulties of the translation were marked for post-translation modification.From the first draft to the final draft,the author repeatedly revised and polished the translation,communicated with the tutor and members of the translation team,and accumulated materials and experience for the writing of the translation report.This report consists of four parts:the introduction of translation project,translation process description,case analysis and conclusion.The first part elaborates three aspects:the source,the purpose and significance of the project,and text analysis.Text analysis provides an in-depth analysis of the nain content and language characteristics of the source text.The second part records the execution of the entire translation project from the beginning to the end.The third part is the main body of this report.In this part,the author focuses on the translation of proper nouns,common nouns,sentences and discourse.After making an in-depth analysis of some cases,the author sums up the translation strategies and methods used in the project.The final chapter summarizes the author’s gains and weakness in the translation practice,in the hope of making improvelent in future translation practices.
