An Empirical Study On Improper Pauses In Chinese-English Consecutive Interpreting

In recent years,consecutive interpreting is playing a greater role and has become an indispensable medium in conferences and business occasions as countries communicate more frequently in politics,economy,culture and other aspects.Fluency is viewed as an important yardstick for measuring the quality of interpretation.Due to various reasons,an interpreter usually makes improper pauses when interpreting.This greatly degrades the quality of the interpretation as it confuses the audience and leads them to question the ability of the translator.Such a scenario is especially common in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting as interpreters are more likely to pause due to limited English output abilities.Based on Daniel Gile's Effort Models,this paper conducts an empirical research on the Chinese-English consecutive interpreting recordings of 5 GSTI student interpreters of Class 2017.The material used is extracted the First Session of the 13th CPPCC National Committee.The paper focuses on analyzing the causes of improper pauses and providing effective methods for interpreters to improve their fluency and overall quality of interpretation.
