| The fluency of interpreting output can directly reflect the quality of interpreting as a whole, and improper pause is an essential factor affecting fluency. Therefore, reducing the occurrence of improper pauses is an effective way in improving the quality of interpreting output. In this thesis, the author first reviewed the literature on this topic, and classified into five categories of improper pause: restructurings,non-grammatical pauses, initial pauses, meaningless repetitions and fillers.Based on the examples of improper pauses in the author’s own interpreting, the thesis discussed in depth the causes of improper pauses. There are mainly three reasons: difficulty in recognizing symbols of note-taking,unfamiliarity to the source language content and lack of self-monitoring in the production process. In the end,the article gave corresponding solutions to each cause, including improving note-taking symbol system, practicing domain-specific materials, using different registers properly, and strengthening self-monitoring.This thesis intended to provide practical suggestions for interpreting students. |
