Chinese landscape painting has been developing for thousands of years under the influence of traditional Chinese philosophy.Today,we have to face up to a realistic problem: our traditional skills are weakening,while the innovation of color and the techniques of making picture effects are more and more abundant.This is the result of the development of the times.The gorgeous picture effects and aesthetic needs are in line with the pursuit of a more open new era.The ancient people’s understanding and application of brush and ink and lines is an insurmountable gap nowadays.It is one of the directions for contemporary landscape painters to think and practice that they use contemporary color concepts to make up for the complexity that the ancients did not have and make Chinese landscape paintings present new characteristics of the times.The biggest difference between contemporary color concept and traditional Chinese color concept is the input and nourishment of Western color concept,which makes the performance of contemporary landscape painting more colorful.In the colorful colors,the simple and elegant,quiet and elegant,implicit and melancholy "gray tone" has become the preference of many artists and audiences in the fast-paced life.In the development of contemporary landscape painting,the expression of "gray tone" has gradually highlighted its unique charm.Through the analysis and reflection of the tendency of gray tone in contemporary landscape painting,this paper explores the significance of "gray tone" in contemporary landscape painting creation.The paper is divided into four chapters.The first chapter gives a brief overview of the definition,classification and emotional expression of gray tone.The second chapter is the focus of this article,and it analyses in detail the causes of the gray tone in the creation of contemporary landscape painting.Chapter three enumerates the painters and their works with gray tone tendency in contemporary landscape painting creation,and makes practical analysis.The fourth chapter further summarizes the significance of gray tone language in contemporary landscape painting creation.
