In the development and exploration of nearly twenty years,diversified and prosperous trend have been presented in the painting world of fine brushwork figure. The works, which have innovative spirit and sense of the contemporaneity,have proliferated and gained a great breakthrough whether in the aspects of theme, techniques or others. It is the reform of color that is particularly prominent and typical. Color is an important vehicle to obtain and strengthen the emotional appeal of the painting, however,in traditional Chinese fine brushwork figure paintings, the expression of color emotion is a more reserved one. The symbolic and generalized ideal of painting color and the traditional Chinese philosophic thoughts come down in one continuous line. In modern times, with the blending of Chinese and Western culture and the impact of the era, the view of ancient painting color,which is inherited for millennium, is broken.Contemporary fine brushwork figure painting world is showing the brand-new appearance of the color,which is the times’ call. Fine brushwork painters began to pay attention to the expression of color, the various silent colors renewed with the help of the painter’s pen.It is gorgeous and fresh, plain and honest, gentle and elegant. In the noisy and prosperous field of brushwork figure color, it appeared a kind of non-conformist color, namely the new forces of color which use gray as the main creation color.Why is there a unique gray language with rapid momentum in the contemporary painting world? This paper will be divided into four chapters to research and comment on this problem.The first chapter will generalize color and the meaning of the grays, and make a brief introduction of the status of color in contemporary fine brushwork figure painting world. The second chapter is the focus of this paper, which make a detailed analysis of the cause of the creation tendency of the grays. This problem will be divided into three aspects to research: the development and inheritance of traditional Chinese color especially the color view, namely the cultural connotation which the grays’ works contain; the influence of Western painting color,especially the systematization and scientificalness of the concepts and skills made a rapid transformation of the color of the traditional Chinese fine brushwork painting; the trigger of the modern development for the choice of color creation, which belongs to the color’s characteristics of the times.The third chapter will select the contemporary typical artists and works of tendency of the grays to appreciate. The fourth chapter is the last chapter, it will make a further summary of the realistic value of the grays fine brushwork figure painting works through the analysis of the preceding paragraphs, and it will think about the typical problems in its development.
