On Fictional Translation Under Translation Compensation Theory

In recent years,the rapid development of translation career requires the guidance of relevant translation theory.An increasing number of translation theorists have put forward many modern translation theories.Study on translation is nothing like the old-fashioned research.Translation compensation has been paid much attention by a multitude of scholars and papers on translation compensation keep emerging.However,study on translation compensation still remains in an immature stage and a more complete and scientific system needs to be built.Study on Translation Compensation by Xia Tingde has become the first monograph centering on translation compensation.The book makes a thorough analysis of translation compensation theory,summarizes research of translation compensation both abroad and at home and puts forward compensation principles accordingly.In a word,the masterpiece lays a solid foundation for the study on translation compensation.Over the past few decades,a growing number of foreign literary works with high quality have been imported into China and hence we are more likely to come in contact with these great works and splendid foreign culture.Translation matters a lot when it comes to the spreading of foreign culture.When translating literary works,translators are expected to convey the original information accurately and simultaneously ensure the cultural implication and artistic value of the work.However,some cultural background knowledge has lost due to the fact that the author and target readers do not share the same cultural knowledge.To compensate the loss,translation compensation is in desperate need.Based upon Study on Translation Compensation and the research findings of other experts,the thesis takes Red Sorghum as its corpus and analyzes typical translation cases in the English translation of Red Sorghum by Howard Goldblatt.Combined with the unique characteristic of literary work,the paper manages to analyze the translation compensation strategies employed in Red Sorghum and tries to provide more specific cases for translation compensation in an attempt to build a more complete and systematic translation compensation theory.The thesis has studied semantic compensation,cultural compensation,aesthetic compensation and pragmatic compensation.Plus,the paper has summarized five types of translation compensation strategies including amplification,substitution,paraphrase,annotation and omission.The thesis provides case study for the translation compensation theory and aims to make a little contribution to the theory.Study on translation compensation strategiesin Red Sorghum may somehow provide some reference for the researchers in future and further promote the spreading of Chinese literature so as to strengthen our cultural confidence.
