Analysis Of Business Liaison Interpreting From The Perspective Of German Functional Theory:a Practice Report On 2016 China Western International Fair

In the past decades,the interpreting profession is gradually becoming eye-catching.As a result,an increasing number of people come to be acquainted with the profession of interpreting.In accordance with different occasions,interpreting is mainly divided into three forms:consecutive interpreting,simultaneous interpreting and liaison interpreting.Compared to consecutive interpreting and simultaneous interpreting which are considered more in demand and therefore more desirable,liaison interpreting is believed to be“the least difficult and valuable”.Liaison interpreting,though not as formal as consecutive and simultaneous interpreting,involves many aspects and requires communicative and coordinative capability of the interpreters.Liaison interpreting strategies are not confined to translation techniques,but include the use of many auxiliary tools,such as body language,and other methods in dealing with emergencies.All these factors are significant for the final interpreting effects.Considering the complexity of this process,inaccurate role positioning or failure to employ the initiative of interpreters would result in the embarrassment and awkward silence in the communication.More seriously,misinterpretation might cause conflicts or even failure in political or commercial negotiations.Currently,little attention has been paid to business liaison interpreting,let alone in-depth research on the interpreter's roles,codes of ethics,and specific interpreting strategies.This report will discuss business liaison interpreting from these three aspects.By closely examining this liaison interpreting practice,this report purports to offer specific strategies in field interpreting under the guidance of German Functional Theory.Incorporating some translation theories,this thesis will elaborate on some flexible strategies,especially those dealing with conflicts,in an attempt to improve the quality of interpreting.This report is based on empirical study of business liaison interpreting and takes the author's own interpreting practice as the target of scrutiny and analysis.This practice,a business liaison interpreting of the 16~thh Western China International Fair(WCIF)in which the author served as the interpreter,reflect the crucial aspects concerning interpreter's roles,initiative and strategies.It is hoped that this report would provide useful references for liaison interpreting learners.
