Analysis Of Consecutive Interpreting From The Perspective Of German Functional Theory

With China's ever-increasing interaction with the world,interpreters are indispensable throughout the communication.Interpreter,as a medium,is to convey the message of two parties.Sometimes,the interpreter also works as a bridge or a matchmaker,forging a closer relationship between two people from different country.However,the interpreter should be keenly aware that he or she should not express its own opinion on any issue or subject or even take side,still less should it interpret in a way that is beyond the speaker 's intention.This report attempts to analyze the interpretation obstacles encountered in real-time consecutive interpreting,the causes of the obstacles and the corresponding coping strategies from the perspective of German Functional Translation Theory.It is common that interpreters will have some foreseeable and unpredictable interpreting barriers or even some objective factors.When doing the task,the interpreter needs to encode,understand and decode of the source information which requires the interpreter with high comprehension capacity and a good knowledge of terms in various fields.In this report,the author will elaborate the interpreting barriers,the causes and the coping strategy from the major three theories of German Functional Translation Theory,namely,Skopos theory,the Translation action theory and the Translation-oriented text analysis theory.The aim of the report is to discover the significance and application of the Functionalist approach by combining the theory and the practical interpreting.The author will analyze and make comparison through the examples based on the major three theories so as to identify the proper coping strategy in consecutive interpreting.Through the empirical study,the author found that German Functional Translation Theory can effectively guide the consecutive interpreting,which is of great value to the theoretical research of similar interpreting activities.Interpreters will have difficulty in accent,terms,cultural differences,etc.While under the guideline of the functionalist approach,the author found that interpreters can resort to strategies like repetition,reassurance,inquiry,preparation,temporary preparation and accumulation of encyclopedia knowledge so as to remove all interpretation barriers.Finally,the author found that these three theories are highly relevant to the real-time consecutive interpreting and the German Functional Translation Theory is conducive to theoretical research in the future.
