A Report On The Translation Of Agricultural English For Science And Technology(Excerpts)

With the rapid globalization in various aspects of life,popular science English articles have become an essential channel of communication.To translate agricultural English for science and technology into accurate,fluent and native Chinese is of great significance for mutual communication,progress and development between China and English-speaking countries.So the report takes the textbook Agricultural English for Science and Technology as the ST for the translation.All the passages are selected from native English passages.Based on the broad and general agricultural knowledge,the textbook combines the features of agricultural popular science English and academic English.It is favorable to train the inter-disciplined agricultural talents who have communicative ability in English.According to the texts typology by Peter Newmark,the translator categorizes Agricultural English for Science and Technology into an informative text,the core of which is information accuracy and readers’ response.Thus,it is suitable to use communicative translation to highlight its text function,heighten readability of translated text and make the TT produce an effect on the readers as close as possible to that produced by the ST on the readers of original work.Under the guidance of communicative translation,the report mainly discusses the process of how the translator finishes the translation of Agricultural English for Science and Technology.The report contains 5 chapters: task description,process description,theoretical basis,case analysis and conclusion.Firstly,the translator gives a brief introduction of the ST,the writer of the ST,the stylistic features of the ST and the significance of the report.In Chapter 2,the translator lists some translation tools she uses and sets a chart of term database.She also concludes some previous studies about communicative translation.In Chapter 3,she introduces what communicative translation is.In the next chapter,based on the communicative translation,the translator presents some case analysis with translation strategies for words and sentences translation.At theend of the report,the translator makes a general conclusion of the translation task with findings and limitations,which helps her to realize shortcomings and to improve her language skills and task-organization.
