On The Translation Of English Elliptical Sentences In Cirrus:From The Perspective Of Communicative Translation

This translation practice report chooses the second Chapter--Cirrus from Ice Formation and Evolution in Cloud and Precipitation:Measurement and Modeling Challenges as the Source Text(ST).Ice Formation and Evolution in Cloud and Precipitation:Measurement and Modeling Challenges is a Meteorological Monograph published by American Meteorological Society(AMS),which narrates measurements and modeling challenges of ice formation and evolution in cloud and precipitation,and focuses on the impact of cloud and precipitation on weather and climate.Cirrus introduces the influence of cirrus on weather and climate and choosing it as the ST can help people to better understand the knowledge of cirrus and promote the development and dissemination of atmospheric science.In the ST,there are many elliptical sentences,which increased the difficulty in understanding and translating.So the translator chooses Peter Newmark's Communicative Translation Theory to guide the translation and selects suitable translation strategies.Newmark classifies texts into three categories:Expressive Text,Informative Text and Vocative Text,and holds that different strategies should be adopted for the translation of different texts.The ST is a meteorological science and technology text.which is a typical information text.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark's Communicative Translation Theory,the translator first analyzes the characteristics of the ST and then sums up three translation strategies for elliptical sentences in meteorological science and technology text.This report is composed of five chapters.Chapter one describes the translation task,the reason and significance of topic selection,and introduces the whole translation process,including preparation before translation,translation process and proofreading after translation.Chapter two is the theoretical background,which gives a brief introduction to Peter Newmark'^ Communicative Translation Theory and its significance for the translation of elliptical sentences.Chapter three studies the classifications and functions of elliptical sentences.Chapter four is the core part in this report,and sums up the translation strategies for elliptical sentences through concrete examples,under the guidance of Peter Newmark's Communicative Translation Theory.There are three strategies,including retention of the ellipsis,supplement to the ellipsis and adaptation to the ellipsis.The last chapter summarizes the author's experience in the translation process and presents the limitations of this report.
