ESP is based on the special needs of learners.One of its distinctive features is to meet the needs of learners.In view of this,this paper takes the demand analysis as the theoretical basis,and carries out the curriculum design of tourism English in secondary vocational schools.Taking Guilin as an example,this study conducted a questionnaire survey and interviews with students,interns,English teachers and employers of tourism service and management major or tourism business department of Guilin Tourism Vocational Secondary Professional School,Guilin Senior Technical School,in order to find out whether the English courses for tourism service and management major currently offered in secondary vocational schools are full or not.Based on the results of demand analysis,this paper puts forward some suggestions on the target design,textbook compilation,teaching methods and evaluation system of Tourism English course in secondary vocational schools.It is found that the English courses offered by tourism service and management specialty in secondary vocational schools can not meet the needs of students and society.It is necessary to design school-based curriculum of tourism English for the students of tourism service and management specialty in secondary vocational schools.Secondary vocational school students,interns,English teachers,professional teachers and employers have different understandings of learning needs and social needs,which results in different expectations of tourism English course in secondary vocational schools.The respondents’ demands for tourism English course in secondary vocational schools are as follows: Firstly,secondary vocational school students of tourism service and management think that the current situation makes tourism English course more and more popular.There are some deviations between the English textbooks used and the future employment needs.It is difficult for teachers to stimulate students’ interest in learning.Secondly,the interns of tourism service and management major in secondary vocational schools think that their English listening and speaking skills can not meet the job needs and future development needs.Thirdly,English teachers and professional teachers believe that English textbooks should cooperate with the study of professional courses,finalize the evaluation rules,and imperceptibly improve students’ English level and cultivatestudents’ tourism professional quality in the process of English teaching.Fourthly,employers such as travel agencies believe that the training of students’ tourism English service skills in secondary vocational schools is divorced from the reality of their posts.This study puts forward the following suggestions for the school-based curriculum design of Tourism English for tourism service and management major in secondary vocational schools: Firstly,to formulate the school-based curriculum objectives of Tourism English for secondary vocational schools,to meet the students’ learning needs and social needs,and to provide the basis for the selection and arrangement of teaching content,teaching activities and evaluation.Secondly,by comparing the tourism English textbooks selected by other colleges and universities,we choose the textbooks suitable for secondary vocational school students’ language level,meeting students’ learning needs and social needs.On this basis,language teachers and professional teachers compile tourism English textbooks with Guilin local characteristics,adopt different presentation forms,and pay attention to interestingness.Thirdly,tourism English class in secondary vocational schools should carry out a variety of teaching activities,such as group discussion and situational simulation,and develop flipped classes and Mu classes to enhance students’ interest in learning.Establish a teacher-led,student-centered classroom model.Fourthly,the curriculum evaluation of Tourism English in secondary vocational schools should adopt a combination of formative assessment and summative assessment,curriculum assessment and learner assessment,such as learners’ feedback to the curriculum,classroom performance and written examination in the process of teaching.Finally,according to the suggestions of curriculum design,this paper designs a teaching case for a class of Guilin secondary vocational tourism service and management specialty in order to meet students’ learning needs.The purpose of this study is to arouse the attention of relevant scholars to the needs analysis of ESP curriculum in secondary vocational schools and the role of ESP demand analysis in the curriculum design optimization of Tourism English in secondary vocational schools. |
