As is known to all,sleep is of paramount importance for everyone.However,with the progress of the society,a considerable number of people suffer from insomnia due to the pressure from work and life.Scientists have long been pondering the mystery of sleep.The core of the exploration is why we need to sleep and why it is necessary.Long-term insomnia can lead to critical and memory and reduced ability in practical operation,seriously affecting the efficiency.This is an English-Chinese translation report on Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams,written by Matthew Walker,a professor of neuroscience and psychology at the university of California,Berkeley.The translator selects chapter14 and chapter 15.Chapter 14 Hurting and Helping Your Sleep,Pills vs.Therapy mainly explores the problem whether insomnia is a physical or a psychological problem,while chapter 15 Sleep and Society,What Medicine and Education Are Doing Wrong;What Google and NASA Are Doing Right argues from a particular point of view that sleep is a social problem,determined by medical,educational,and work patterns.The purpose of the translator is to provide the target readers with information about the quantity and quality of sleep as well as the importance of sleep to health.Besides,the translator also hopes to improve the ability of translation to a certain extent.The source text pertains to the category of medical texts,which has a large number of medical terms and languages.Thus,the translator has encountered many difficulties in translation.In the translation report,the translator mainly adopts the corresponding methods through the analysis of specific examples.The translation report mainly introduces the difficulties in three aspects,which are medical terms and drug names,clinical medical language,and complex therapeutic programs.For medical terms anddrug names,the translator adopts transliteration,annotation and literal translation.For clinical medical language,the translator applies reconstruction,division,addition,deletion and voice conversion.For complex therapeutic programs,the translator uses discourse analysis,substitution and adding conjunctive words.Finally,the translator summarizes the major findings of the translation process and the limitations and reflections of translation.
