Strategies Of Improving Escort Interpreting

With the development of our economy,China has achieved an increasingly close relationship with other countries.Interpreting plays an important role in people's social and cultural communication and is in a growing demand.However,interpreting is a challenging job,which can be influenced by many factors.Escort interpreting,with its characteristics of spontaneity and broad spectrum of contexts,is one of the most widely used forms of interpretation.Interpreters may engage in escort interpreting,from formal meetings to factory inspections to tours of resorts.The study is a report on the author's interpreting practice for Shanghai Beiyi International Education Company.Based on this interpreting practice,the author analyzes and teases out disadvantages and advantages arising in this interpreting practice,and then summarizes some factors that influence the quality of this escort interpreting,i.e.memory,note-taking speed,language skills,and preparation before the interpreting task.In view of these factors,the author proposes the strategies which can improve the quality of interpreting:(1)to improve the bilingual competence and ability of analyzing the meaning of the source language,(2)to expand the scope of knowledge by consciously drawing a variety of information in daily life,(3)to get fully prepared for the task prior to the interpretation,and(4)to enhance interpreting skills at improvisation and the contingency ability.The author hopes that this practice report will give some enlightenment to the novices and offer useful reference for the research of interpreting.
