| Ernest Miller Hemingway,one of the famous novelists in the twentieth century,is famous in the world for his unique artistic style and superb modern narrative art.Spain is Hemingway’s favorite country.Hemingway’s love for Spain originated from bullfighting.His obsession with bullfighting made him write the famous bullfighting monograph Death in the afternoon.Hemingway was deeply convinced by the courage and honor of the matador.The courage of the brave matador in the face of death coincided with the “tough man” spirit that Hemingway had been pursuing all his life.The spirit of the brave bullfighter and Santiago,the hero of Hemingway’s the old man and the sea,matches each other.The spirit is that in the vicious environment,not yielding to fate,with their courage and wisdom and tenacious struggle against fate,to safeguard the dignity of a person.Under the pressure,it still remains elegant.From the point of view of narratology,this paper studies the superb narrative art of death in the afternoon by means of close reading of texts and related theories of narratology,and subdivides it into plot,characters and environment.Hemingway gave full play to the role of person in the narration of death in the afternoon,and used the narrative method of “display” to make the narration more intuitive,simple,objective and credible,which greatly impacted the traditional European narrative techniques.The mixed use of zero focus and external focus makes the narration concise and objective,but conveys rich in-depth information.Hemingway’s legendary life experience and rich emotional experience enrich his literary creation.Hemingway has been pursuing his ideal and belief all his life.He pays close attention to human destiny with positive humanitarianism and high sense of responsibility and thinks about the value of life and death.He left a strong mark in the history of American literature and world literature,worthy of the title of a generation of literary heroes. |
