Ernest Hemingway is one of the most outstanding novelists in the history of western literature. His A Farewell to Arms is generally considered as a great genuine masterpiece among its contemporaries. Since its publication in 1929, the novel has received substantial attention. Critics have almost exhausted the study of the novel. However, a narrotological approach that might prove more fruitful in explicating the narrative techniques in Hemingway's novel remains unattended. This paper will approach the novel from the perspective of classical narratology. Namely, by combining textual reading with theoretical analysis, the present author will discuss the fictional narrative strategies and the effects. The main body of this paper will focus on narrative situation, narrative voice, narrative distance and narrative order and therefore to check the narrative effects of the story.
