The Snows of Kilimanjaro is a stream of consciousness novel whose theme isdeath. The work inherits Ernest Hemingway’s style---simple and concise. Thenovel mainly depicts the protagonist’s inner experience, uses the technique ofstream of consciousness and gets rid of the shackles of time and space to achievea jump and fast seamless connection between thought and reality; through thesnow mountains, hyenas, vultures and a series of rich in symbolic imageries, the reader can dig out the deep connotation hidden from the refined language, which forms a huge iceberg hidden under the sea, so that the short story hasa connotation of the long story, which becomes one of the classic works inHemingway’s art career. The protagonist is a writer who was ever addicted to the material desireand cannot help himself. Through being reluctant to leave, insights andconfession before death, it reveals the writer’s thinking of himself and life. The novel contains two clues: the Harry’s death process in the eyes of Helenand Harry’s spiritual journey before his death. Two clues are crossing anduniform in the time axis."Death" is often regarded as an ending in thetraditional sense, which is difficult for people to accept, but have to do that, meanwhile have no idea about how to accept. However, Hemingway splits it andmakes a comparison to show a real death journey clearly, acutely and gently.Because death is often unprepared, and only to know ahead of time, in the processof waiting for death, yearning for the life instinct, desire to reselect thelife, and the unfinished business and ideal cause people’s reflections andthoughts of life, and lead people to have a deeper love of life. The author arrangesuch an identity to the character, which is very typical, but in the face ofdeath, this kind of identity is weaken, because all people are equal beforedeath, which means not only death is the ending that everyone can’t resist andavoid, but also death brings people enlightenment of equality. The whole novel, which consists of dialogues, deducts the process of Harry’sinner transformation. The snows of Kilimanjaro itself is a great metaphor. Inwestern culture, white has always a symbol of innocence, and the top of the hill, the holy place, is the garden of Eden where Harry finally yearns for the spirit.Although it is difficult to reach, it is Harry’s rebirth and hope. Reachingthe holly mountain covered by snow needs people’s hard climbing and trekking, and people also pursue the spiritual home and the temple of god like that. The snows of Kilimanjaro, based on the special artistic concept, throughconsciousness gets into the subconscious tip of the bottom, and the symbol, metaphor, image and other many kinds of artistic ways, analyzes the greatcultural connotation of the theme of death of the work, reveals Hemingway’spursuance for the meaning of life, deep human feelings and the ultimate concernof life, and reveals the social significance and the aesthetic connotation ofthe theme of death of the work.
