A Translation Project Report On Little Stories Of Married Life(Excerpts)

This is a translation project report.The source text is excerpted from Little Stories of Married Life,a collection of short stories written by Mary Stewart Cutting,an American writer.The whole book consists of 11 chapters and there is no official published Chinese version of this book currently.The translator selects stories from the first,second and fifth chapters to do this translation practice and describes the process of translation in this report.Mary Stewart Cutting is a suffragist and her works are mainly about love and marriage.First published in 1896,Little Stories of Married Life tells separate stories in each independent chapter.In this book,she describes the responsibility and suffering of different newly married women in family life in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century.The book also displays that Women begin to raise their self-consciousness in marriage when great changes have taken place.The translated text provided by this translation project is of certain significance for the study of the development of Early Feminism.Little Stories of Married Life is a collection of short stories of Realism so the major problem in the translation process is to reproduce the original language style.In consideration of great differences between English and Chinese and the expectation of target language readers,the translator adopts Skopostheorie proposed by German Functionalist School as the guiding theory.Translation techniques like conversion,addition,sequence change and reorganization are also adopted to make the translated text readable.In the process of doing the translation practice,the translator has a better understanding of the development of early feminism and the guidance of Skopostheorie to the translation of realist short stories.Besides,the translator analyses the problems encountered in the whole process of translation and also realizes that she needs to improve her translation ability and literary knowledge.To be a qualified translator,there is still a long way to go.
