C-E Translation Report Of Metamorphosis:Reflections Of 60 Zhejiang Entrepreneurs(Excerpts):Translation Of Cultural Vacancy Words

This report is based on the translation of Metamorphosis:Reflections·of 60 Zhejiang Entrepreneurs,which is a simulated translation project.The author selects six chapters as the translation project and completes this report after a thorough analysis.The original material,written by financial journalists after interviewing some famous Zhejiang businessmen,is about the life stories and business experiences of Zhejiang businessmen.It is a biographical style text with strong literary flavor and many cultural vacancy words.When doing the translation,the author finds some difficulties,especially the cultural vacancy words.These words have few or no corresponding expression in target language due to the profoundly historical and cultural differences between oriental and occidental worlds,thus failing to convey the cultural connotation in the source language.Therefore,how to concisely translate the cultural vacancy words and precisely convey the cultural information is the main point that this report attempts to discuss in depth.The author divides the difficulties into two aspects:words with full cultural vacancy and words with partial cultural vacancy.From the perspective of Hans Vermeer,s Skopos theory,solutions to the above difficulties are put forward as follows:(1)adopting cultural compensation and cultural simplification to translate words with full cultural vacancy,(2)adopting concept replacement and paraphrase to translate words with partial cultural vacancy.It is shown that the above methods can effectively solve the translation problems in this project,which will hopefully provide useful guidance and reference for the author and other translators to finish the C-E translation of cultural vacancy words.
