Reader-friendly Recreation Of Dash And Metaphor In The Chinese Translation Of Frommer's South Africa Chapter Two

This thesis is a practice report based on the Chinese translation of Frommer's South Africa,which is one of Frommer's travel guides published by Wiley Publishing,Inc..The translator uses the second chapter of this guidebook as the translation material,which covers today's South Africa,survey of South African history,the lay of its land,ethnic issues,recommended books,film overview,and its cuisines.In this report,the translator discusses the problems in translation and solutions in terms of a reader-friendly approach.In order to make the translation readable and acceptable to readers and inspire their interest for travel,the translator firstly conducts a stylistic analysis on the source text at the level of words,syntax,and discourse,and then,based on the analysis,adopts the reader-friendly translation approach introduced into the translation field by Eugene Nida from H.R.Jauss' s acceptance theory.Under the guidance of this approach and through a deep analysis of the translation problems of dash and metaphor,the translator came up with relevant solutions,such as keeping or replacing dash with other punctuation marks,retaining metaphors,or using free translation to deal with English metaphor problems.Through the analysis of this translation practice,the translator concludes that the reader-friendly approach has some positive impact on tour guide translation.Moreover,the translator presents this report in the hope that it could serve as a reference to the translation of similar kind.
