A Report On The Chinese-English Translation Of UESTC Guidebook For Visa Application

This report stands exactly on a Chinese-English translation project authorized by the Office of International Cooperation of the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China(UESTC).In a terse way,some fundamental information about the project is introduced.Then the underpinning theory is presented,followed by a proper justification for the relevance of the theory.Besides,the report also expounds the practical guidance of the translation norms to the project.Specifically,under the guidance of preliminary norms,some preparatory work,like the ST analysis and the collection of paralleling texts,is performed orderly.Consequently,the general features of the guidebooks and the distinctive features of the ST which is divided into three sub types,including the table texts,the flow-chart texts and the FAQ texts in accordance with the text form,are summarized respectively.Under the guidance of initial norms,the report launches a further investigation into the ST and its paralleling texts and proposes a customized translation strategy.Last but not least,the guidance of operational norms is exemplified by some methods for the translation of the table texts,the flow-chart texts and the FAQ texts.The significance of the report mainly lies in the following three aspects.Firstly,it summarizes the general features of guidebooks and the unique characteristics of the source text-“?????????????????(UESTC Guidebook for Visa Application)”.Secondly,it correspondingly proposes an information-adequate,acceptability-oriented translation strategy.Most importantly,it explicates how some customized translation methods for the table texts,the flow-chart texts and the FAQ texts in guidebook are performed in line with their own distinctive characteristics.With the pace-setting translation strategy,the methods to translate the table texts in this project include the conversion into passive voice,the addition of non-animated subject and the addition of hypernym;the methods to translate the flow-chart texts are the omission of subject,the change of animated subjects into non-animated ones and the division of sentence according to sense groups;the methods to translate FAQ texts are the adoption of the first-person perspective in interrogative sentences,the completion of personal pronoun as subject in answers and the adoption of imperative sentences as answers.These summarized methods and features of guidebooks may serve as references for later translators.In this way,more efficient guidebook translation with high quality might be realized.
