| George Bernard Shaw is an outstanding British critic and dramatist who won the 1925 Nobel Prize for Literature for his idealism and humanitarianism.As a social activist,he advocated that the playwright should actively reflect the sharp social problems at that time in the play,and trigger the audience’s thinking and achieve the purpose of teaching.As a master of drama,Bernard Shaw has created a number of distinctive and lifelike characters in the drama.However,the academic community does not have a systematic study of the character image of George Bernard Shaw.Therefore,this thesis takes the character image of George Bernard Shaw as the research object,and combines the social background of the time,through reading the drama text and related literature,trying to analyze the character image of Bernard Shaw from many angles.In addition to the introduction and conclusion,the full text is divided into three chapters:The first chapter starts from the perspective of gender and analyzes the different types of male and female relationships to analyze the characteristics of women and men shaped in Shaw’s drama.The first is male and female under the patriarchal system.The most representative ones are Conti and Morrill in Conti,and the second is male and female under the leadership of Vitality.It is very common in the dramas,such as An He Tanner in "Man and Superman",Elisa and Higgins in "Pie Meiliang",and so on.There is also a male and a female who love and have no fruit,such as " Bras Binder and Mrs.Sicily in the Transition of Captain Brasbinder are attracted to each other but break away from each other because of the changes in their feelings.The second chapter analyzes some of the themes that Bernard Shaw has repeatedly discussed in the process of shaping characters.These themes truly reflect the social environment in which the author was at the time and the implications of his ideas when he was shaping the characters.This chapter mainly makes a comprehensive evaluation and research on the drama creation of Shaw’s three periods from the perspective of shaping the characters.According to the writer’s drama creation period,he analyzes the capitalists,clergymen and leaders who Shaw created in the early social dramas,the mid-term religious reform dramas and the later political dramas,and strives to create a character image in the process of Shaw’s character.The theme construction embodied is discussed and studied.The third chapter discusses the shaping of the characters from three aspects: contradiction and conflict,character language and plot setting.From the perspective of artistic methods,it analyzes the prominent characteristics of Bernard Shaw in shaping the characters.By highlighting the character traits of the characters in conflicts,the characters are shaped more stereoscopically.The discussion style of language not only allows people with different opinions to have enough room for speaking,but also allows the audience to learn to think from different angles.At the same time,the elements of music are added to the language,so that the characters can relax and let the audience clearly capture the changes in the inner feelings of the characters.To dilute the plot,in the rest of the drama,the drama is to comment on and discuss the completed plot,which is also a bold innovation by Bernard Shaw on the structure of traditional drama.Through his own drama creation,George Bernard Shaw presents us with a colorful image world.Based on the works of Bernard Shaw’s plays,this paper starts from the perspective of gender and analyzes the characteristics of Shaw’s characters and puts the characters in the works into different Analytical research under the theme,while indepth study of Shaw’s artistic approach to shaping characters,in order to make a detailed and systematic interpretation of the shaping of characters in Shaw’s drama. |
