The translation practice report is based on the translation practice of Bernard Shaw(Chapter 19)by Michael Holroyd. Its main content is a chronological account of Shaw’s life.Chapter 19,selected by this translation practice report, mainly narrates Shaw’s life and what he saw and heard during World War II.The purpose of this translation practice report is to show the achievements of translation practice, and summarize the problems and solutions encountered during the translation process. This translation practice report combines hermeneutics translation theory to explain, analyze and understand the original text and revise the translation,so that the translation can conform to the style of the source text.Specifically, guided by George Steiner’s hermeneutics translation theory, this translation practice report processes the translation according to the four stages of translation, namely trust, aggression, incorporation, and compensation, and finds some problems in the translation process, and then modifies the translation according to the hermeneutics translation theory. The first stage is to establish trust in the original text;the second stage deals mainly with the translation from two aspects of language and background, including four methods of changing parts of speech, extending lexical meaning, adding and subtracting phrases and dealing with proverbs;the third stage mainly deals with the translation from the language aspect, including three methods of reorganizing sentence structure, converting language type, and converting active and passive voices;the fourth stage deals mainly with the translation from two aspects of background and language, including three methods of adding annotations, handling quotations, and standardizing punctuation. The quality of the translation is improved through the treatment of these four stages.Through this translation practice,we find that there are many differences between Chinese and English, but under the guidance of the hermeneutic translation theory,we try to maintain a balance between the original text and the target text so that the sentences are smooth and fluent. It is hoped that the translation practice report can provide relevant information for researchers who will research Shaw.
