English reading teaching is one of the important parts in senior high school English teaching.The New English Curriculum Standard advocates an English learning activity concept that points to the development of the discipline’s core competences,and learning methods such as independent learning,cooperative learning,and inquiry learning,which requires teachers to change the traditional teacher-centered English reading teaching model and re-establish a student-centered English reading teaching model.Project-based learning method is a teaching and learning mode based on constructivism,humanism and learning by doing theories.In the project-based learning method,students are the main body of learning and teachers are in an auxiliary position.This method embodies the concept the New English Curriculum Standard.At present,project-based learning method has been widely adopted at home and abroad,and has achieved some results,but it is seldom adopted in senior high school English reading teaching.The purpose of this thesis is to apply project-based learning method to senior high school English reading teaching.It aims to answer the following two questions:(1)Compared with traditional teaching methods,can the project-based learning method more effectively stimulate students’ reading motivation and improve students’ reading interest?(2)Can the project-based learning method more effectively improve the English reading comprehension ability of senior high school students?In this study,96 students from two classes in Grade 2 in Shandong Jigang Senior High School were selected as the research subjects.During the three-month teaching process,the project-based learning method was adopted in the experimental class,while the traditional teaching method was adopted for the control class.By analyzing the results of English reading tests,questionnaires and interview before and after the experiment,the changes in English reading comprehension ability,interest and motivation were compared.The experimental results show that compared with thetraditional English reading teaching method,the project-based learning method can more effectively stimulate students’ English reading motivation and improve students’ English reading interest and reading comprehension ability.The application of this method in senior high school English reading teaching provides students with the possibility of autonomous learning.The teaching process is student-centered,which can greatly stimulate students’ learning interest.Certainly,there are some limitations in this study,which need to be further improved in future studies.
