For many years,English reading teaching has been valued in high school English courses in our country.The General Senior High School English Curriculum Standards(2020)also puts forward more requirements on reading teaching.It advocates student-centered teaching,and the teaching should pay attention to cultivating students’ autonomous learning and cooperative learning ability and promoting the formation of students’ core literacy.However,in the actual high school English reading classes,there is still a phenomenon that the classroom is mainly teacher-oriented,explanation-oriented,and ignores the learning status of students.Therefore,it is urgent to change the current situation of reading teaching and promote students’ reading learning.In recent years,reading circles teaching model has attracted the attention of many researchers.It is a student-centered teaching model,which involves the process of students’ autonomous learning and cooperative learning.And the role setting and activity mode of reading circles also reflects the connotation of the core literacy of English subject to a certain extent.Hence,this study intends to apply the reading circles teaching model raised by a scholar,Mark Furr,to senior high school English reading classes,aiming to explore the following three questions:(1)What is the effect of reading circles teaching model on senior high school students’ interest in English reading?(2)What is the effect of reading circles teaching model on senior high school students’ comprehension ability in English reading?(3)What is the effect of reading circles teaching model on senior high school students’ cooperative consciousness?The researcher conducted this action study for three months between October and December 2022.The subjects were 50 students in grade one of a high school in Shenyang.A variety of tools such as questionnaires,interviews,tests and reflective journals were used to collect data in this action study.SPSS software was used to analyze the questionnaire data and test results.Moreover,interviews and reflective journals were used as auxiliary tools to help analyze and reflect on the problems in the research.The results of this study show that the reading circles teaching model has a positive effect on promoting students’ reading interest and enhancing students’ reading comprehension ability,as well as their cooperative consciousness.
