Along with the rapid development of modern biotechnology, discussion of genetically modified organisms(GMO)has become a hot topic. As people understand GMO in different ways,GMO is subjected to various controversies around the world. Therefore,it is imperative to translate the frontier information about GMO into Chinese so that domestic scholars and the general public may study it and use it for reference.First, the report states the background of the selection of GMO Myths and Truths, reviews some relevant literature, and mentions the significance and methods of this research.Next,it describes the text type and linguistic features of the source text. Its linguistic features are elaborated in three aspects, namely, the features of diction, sentences and text. Then, the report introduces the whole translation process, including the pre-translation phase, the stage of comprehension and reproduction and the phase of revision and improvement. Finally, the author selects Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation as the translation guide. This thesis analyses in detail the translated text from the perspective of words, sentences and discourse by using concrete examples.Texts on science and technology are very professional in diction,so the author only concentrates on analysis of the three most representative classes of words, namely, acronyms, terms and polysemous words. At the sentence level, this thesis mainly discusses the translation of nominalization structure, the passive voice, and long and difficult sentences, and it proves the feasibility of applying such translation techniques as inversion, division, conversion, etc.Since English and Chinese differ greatly in forms of expression, with the former being characterized by hypotaxis and the latter by parataxis, this thesis focuses on the textual translation from two angles——the translation of connectives and inherent logic. In the course of translation practice, guided by Newmark’s Semantic Translation and Communicative Translation, the author takes into full consideration the needs of the target language readers and makes the translation as smooth, intelligible and natural as possible. This report aims at enlightening translators of science and technology texts so that they may improve their translation.
