A Study On Xiao Yuncong’s Style Of Landscape Painting

Xiao Yuncong,as a painter in the late Ming Dynasty and early Qing Dynasty,was the founder of Gushu painting,has made outstanding achievements in painting,poetry and calligraphy.His works have great research value and influence in the early Qing Dynasty.He not only created Gushu Painting School,but also influenced the representative figures of Xin’an Painting School,such as Hongren and Wang Zhirui.As an adherent painter,he has experienced the turbulence of the country and the change of dynasty.Although the environment is hard,it still persists in the creation of art.He not only learned from the ancients and natures,but also found his own unique style and language of landscape painting from the regional culture and special times.He "did not learn from the Song Dynasty or the Yuan Dynasty,and he became a unique style" which blended the past and the present and opened up a new style of painting in the early Qing Dynasty.Xiao Yuncong’s landscape painting style is slightly different in the early,middle and late stages.Therefore,it is necessary to conduct in-depth analysis according to its background factors to explore its style characteristics.He not only learned Ni and Huang,but also absorbed and merged hundreds of schools of thought,such as Song and Yuan Dynasty.He learned many advantages,mastered the techniques and rules of landscape painting creation maturely,and combined his own practice and perception,opened the pioneer of painting style in the early Qing Dynasty.Through the teacher-inheritance relationship,the times,politics,geographical features and other different aspects to find the root of Xiao Yuncong from the formation of landscape painting style.This paper focuses on the analysis of Xiao Yuncong’s landscape painting style characteristics,based on his representative works,combined with ink,composition,artistic conception of these three aspects to conduct in-depth research.Xiao Yuncong learned from various schools of Song and Yuan Dynasty and created a unique style of painting,combining his own personality characteristics.Because of the background of the adherents and the influence of the political environment,he had a noble feeling of perseverance,patriotism and patriotism,and pursued a simple and leisurely life in seclusion.He has been living in the south of the Yangtze River and rarely travels far away.His works mostly focus on the mountains and rivers of his hometown,eulogizing his love and praise for his hometown.His landscape paintings show a desolate,light and delightful style,and express his reclusive thought through the real scenery of mountains and rivers.This article takes Xiao Yuncong’s landscape painting style as the research clue,starting from Xiao Yuncong’s life experience,personality characteristics,teacher-inheritance relationship,and combining with political background,living environment,artistic modality,etc.,to trace its root,to explore the formation of Xiao Yuncong’s landscape painting style,and then combined with his case works to make an intuitive analysis,to summarize Xiao Yun’s landscape painting style characteristics.This article is divided into five parts to elaborate the style of Xiao Yuncong,s landscape painting.The first part elaborates Xiao Yuncong’s life,art experience and the "Gushu Painting School" he created.The second part summarizes four factors that influence Xiao Yuncong’s landscape painting style,one is the influence of painting style of Song and Yuan Dynasties on Xiao Yuncong,s landscape painting;the other is the influence of the great political background of the survivors on Xiao Yuncong’s landscape painting style;the third is the influence of Taiping government in Gulu area on Xiao Yuncong’s landscape painting style;the fourth is Xiao Yuncong’ s era.Development and prosperity,printmaking techniques have a great impact on his landscape painting style,but from another perspective,his landscape painting style promoted the progress of printmaking at that time.The third part summarizes the style and personality characteristics of Xiao Yuncong’s landscape painting from the three major directions of ink,composition and artistic conception,and combining with his representative works,this paper makes an in-depth analysis and summarizes the style and personality characteristics of Xiao Yuncong’s landscape painting.The fourth part studies the influence of Xiao Yuncong’s landscape painting style on the Qing Dynasty scholars,iron painting and Japanese Nanzong literati paintings.Finally,the fifth part introduces the style and characteristics of Xiao Yuncong’s landscape painting and explores the reference and guiding value of Xiao Yuncong’s landscape painting style to contemporary landscape painting creation.
