Report On The Subtitle Translation Of The Ascent Of Woman From The Perspective Of Multimodal Discourse Analysis

Subtitle translation of documentary becomes increasingly important in the translation field.Under the guidance of Multimodal Discourse Analysis,the source text is selected from a documentary series called The Ascent of Woman.By analyzing translation process,the report explores when we consider different relationships among the modalities,the translator can adopt some certain translation techniques to convey the spirit of the documentary and accord with the habit of the target audiences.Image modality,auditive modality and subtitle modality are the three main modalities in the documentary.When the image modality and subtitle modality are in intensified relationship,the translator can use shift technique and omission technique.When the auditive modality and subtitle modality are in intensified relationship,the translator can use addition technique.When the image modality,auditive modality and subtitle modality are in non-intensified relationship,the translator can adopt addition technique,omission technique and shift technique as required.Considering the time and space requirements of subtitle,omission technique is commonly used in the translation.The translator can adopt some idioms and four character words to achieve omission.In a word,this study is significant in that the study range of Multimodal Discourse Analysis is expanded and the translation provides a new insight into the study of subtitle translation.
