With the continuous advancement of the new curriculum reform,the goal of English learning has shifted from simple test-taking to the needs of social life.According to the new curriculum standards,for students in junior high school,the most important thing in learning English is to improve comprehensive use of English skills,especially the reading skills.As an key teaching point in junior high school,reading plays a replaceable role in English teaching because without reading,English teaching and learning is unthinkable.To say so is not only due to the high proportion of reading in existing examinations,but also due to the decisive role played by reading in the knowledge expansion and emotional development.With the continuous improvement of reading theories,models,and learning strategies,English reading teaching has shifted from the traditional translation method to the highly efficient reading mode of flexible strategies application.Unfortunately,in practical teaching,there are still poor areas where efficiency of reading teaching and reading proficiency level of junior high school students are being weakened in our country.The overall lag here mainly refers to junior high schools in rural areas.Based on the above considerations,this study focuses on the reading teaching of junior middle school in rural areas,and discusses the effective application of strategies in reading by junior middle school students.In this study,students’ questionnaires,teachers’ questionnaires,interviews,and other quantitative research methods were used to investigate the current status of English reading ability cultivation in rural junior high schools.Our analysis of students’ survey data showed that rural students’ interest in reading was profound,but they are not able to use reading skills properly or even unfamiliar with them,which results in poor reading performance.The survey results for teachers show that teachers pay attention to reading instruction but they haven’t given lesson preparation enough time.Besides,their teaching lacked innovation.And their haven’t given sufficient attention to teaching of application of reading strategies.We believe that the teacher’s problems are mainly due to: first,teachers’ lack of teaching ability and attention to reading;second,the teaching models adopted by teachers are outdated and their preparation for each class is not enough;third,the significance of developing students’ reading interest is neglected by teachers.In addition,the lack of language environment caused by backward English teaching conditions in rural areas is also a cause that cannot be ignored.On this basis,this article explains the application of effective strategies in reading English in rural junior high schools from the perspectives of concepts,methods,teaching models,and the cultivation of students’ interests,with a view to promoting students’ ability to apply effectively strategies in their English reading and to guiding teachers’ effective reading teaching in junior high schools in rural areas.
