The source text of this translation practice is selected from a travel textbook called Ancient Chinese Architecture and Gardens.It’s a guide book to study Chinese ancient architecture and classical gardens.The book introduces not only the evolution of Chinese traditional architecture in different periods,but also the specific cities,palaces,houses,temples,especially gardens and their respective cultural characteristics.Guided by text typology,the translator translates the sixth chapter of this book,amounting about 14,000 words in total.This chapter covers basic knowledge of classical Chinese gardens and introduces the origin,development and basic characteristics of Chinese classical gardens.Besides,there are many poems,couplets,terminology and quotations.The report falls into six parts:The first part is task description,which introduces the characteristics of this excerpt and the reasons and significance of this topic.The second part is the description of translation process.Before translation,the translator reads the source text carefully and analyzes its textual content and language form.The translator also reads a lot of parallel texts and related materials in order to lay a solid foundation for translation practice.This section also describes translation process,as well as the proofreading of translation.The third part is literature review,which introduces the current research and limitation about translation of Chinese classical gardens.The fourth part introduces text typology and its application,including how to choose the appropriate translation strategies according to text types and the applicability of text typology.The fifth part is case study,in which the translator analyzes the difficulties in translation and proposes different translation strategies from the linguistic and cultural levels.The analysis at linguistic level falls into three levels: lexical,syntactic and discourse levels.The analysis at cultural level falls into three levels: poetry andcouplets,historical information and architectural thought.The sixth part sums up the experience and limitation in this translation practice.The report aims to study the application of text typology in translation about the classical Chinese gardens.The translator should choose suitable translation strategies according to different text type to convey the information of source text.
