A Report On Translating Invisible Child(Excerpts)

As one of the significant channels for cultural exchanges between China and western countries,news translation plays an irreplaceable role in providing the latest international news for people all over the world.However,the news feature,or feature story,a kind of unique style of journalese,is of great difference from the general news report,because it is characterized by both the objectivity and the literariness,and it is known as a type of short non-fictional story.To study and analyze the translation of foreign news works is conducive to attract more outstanding news works from different cultures,render Chinese people to understand the aesthetic perception and humanistic concern conveyed by them,and promote cross-cultural exchanges between China and foreign countries.Therefore,the author of this paper selects the excellent feature story of Invisible Child(《隐形儿》)from New York Times as the material for translation and analysis,and tries to understand the language features of English feature stories,so as to put up with some relevant opinions on the translation techniques for the feature stories.In the process of translation,the author comes up with the two most important parts in this paper.Firstly,the feature story is prominently characterized by objectivity,literariness and creativeness;secondly,since news feature contains a large number of proper nouns and various sentence patterns that are imbued with unique features of news writing,such as cultural-loaded words,rhetorical sentences,proverbs and slangs,thus,how to properly adopt the relevant translation techniques or strategies to transform the two different languages without destroying their original features is a great challenge for the author as well as the most special part in this paper..Eventually,through this translation practice,the author of this paper on one hand hopes that she can improve her own translation skills,make a better grasp of the wording features as well as the syntactic style of the feature story,and accumulate much more experiences on translating the news features.On the other hand,she also hopes that she can contribute her modest efforts to the introduction of more excellent foreign news feature stories and literatures or documents concerned with the study of the news features translation.
