A Translation Project Report On Rascal In Paradice(Chapter 6)

This paper is a practical report on the translation from English to Chinese,and the translation material is excerpted from Chapter 6 of non-fiction Rascals in Paradise written by James A.Michener,an American writer and A.Grove Day,an outstanding literary figure in Hawaii.Based on historical facts and rich imagination,the author reflects the historical characteristics of the Great Navigation Age in the ups and downs of adventure stories.Considering that the original text has both historical authenticity and literary artistry,under the guidance of semantic translation theory,the author chooses literal translation methods combined with specific context to reappear the historical authenticity of the original text to the greatest extent;at the same time,according to communicative translation,the author is committed to transmitting information,jumping out of the shackles of the original structure,eliminating target language readers’ reading barriers,and enabling the target language readers feel the artistic effect of the original literary creation to the greatest extent.Translating this book can provide some reference materials for those who study the translation of non-fiction literary works in the South Pacific.Moreover,how to balance the historical authenticity and the artistic quality of literary works in the process of translation is worthy of further study and consideration.I hope that readers can dialectically consider the significance of “great geographical discovery” after reading this story.The great geographical discovery did bring power and wealth to the European world,but it also accompanied by cruel colonial plunder,and the native people have paid a heavy price for it.On the other hand,the story can well enlighten us to hug peace and refuse colonialism in the future development.This translation report consists of four chapters.The first chapter is the introduction of the project,including the source of the project,the analysis of the project and the significance of the project.The second chapter is the translation process,including pre-translation preparation,translation execution and post-translation proofreading.The third chapter is cases study,including translation difficulties and problems,an overview of translation theory and cases study.In the part of cases analysis,the author analyzes from two aspects: lexical and logical relations.The lexical aspect includes the nautical terminology translation under the guidance of semantic translation and the lexical translation under the guidance of communicative translation;the logical aspect includes the processing of logical connection,the processing of omitting connection and the processing of referring connection.The fourth chapter is a summary of translation practice,including translation enlightenment,translation lessons and problems to be solved.
